Course Description

This course focuses on approaches to accompanying a singer or soloist in a small group setting.

One of the most important aspects of playing guitar is accompaniment. In-demand guitarists are masters of harmony and are able to accompany singers and instrumentalists in a myriad of styles. In this course you will learn the fundamentals of accompanying a soloist or singer using well constructed, musical voiceleading between chords. in short, you will begin to master harmony. This course begins with an in depth look at good voice leading in the context of the ii-V-I progression. Next we learn some simple but effective ways to down size your chord voicings to the most essential notes. These concepts are then applied over the changes to a popular jazz standard as well as Bossa Nova and Samba rhythms. By taking this course, you are one step closer to mastering the art of comping.
